"The BBC report on East Timor of 30 May 2006 Emergency rule for E Timor leader says:~

"Mr Alkatiri is deeply unpopular but refuses to resign and there are few obvious successors to him, our correspondent says”

1. Shouldn´t they be mentionning their sources?

2. The reports should be more accurate reporting on the Statements issued by the President:

Todays Presidential Statement says:“The President in close collaboration and permanent collaboration with the Prime Minister and the President of the National Parliament, anounces that it is putting into place the necessary measures to prevent violence and avoid more deaths, in order to ensure the quick reestablishement of public order and the normal operation of the democratic instutitions, assuming the key responsability in the aresa of defense and national security, in his role as Supreme Comander of the Armed Forces.

This framework for collaboration and strengthenned articulation involves the following entities:

• Ministry of Defense and Interior and all other entities and dependent services
• The Falintil-FDTL and PNTL
• The State information and security services and Crisis Cabinet
• The International Defense and Security Forces present in the Territory at the request of the State’s Institutions

”There is therefore a clear effort from the democratically elected institutions of East Timor to respect, in this difficult moment and out of the ordinary circunstances, the contitution of East Timor.

3. The causes of instability are attributed repeatedly to the difficult living conditions in the country citing the UNDP, and the local people. However, I believe the evaluation of the performance of Government by the World Bank just 1 month ago should not be ignored.

WASHINGTON, May 25, 2006 – World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz issued the following statement today on the current security situation in Timor-Leste.

“My colleagues and I are deeply saddened by the current crisis in Timor-Leste. On behalf of our staff and our board, I would like to express the World Bank’s sincere hope that the situation will soon be resolved and peace and tranquility restored. Timor-Leste has made tremendous strides in the very short time since its first free elections in 2001.

Quick action on the part of the Timorese leadership is needed to resolve the current conflict in a peaceful and constructive way to ensure that the progress that has been made is not lost. The World Bank stands ready to support the people of Timor-Leste to continue its path of peace and continued development.

“As I said during my visit there in April, Timor-Leste has achieved much thanks to the country’s sensible leadership and sound decision making which have helped put in place the building blocks for a stable peace and a growing economy. It seemed to have achieved a degree of social and political harmony and stability that was remarkable against the background of the country’s tragic history. I hope that the current situation will be resolved soon so that Timor-Leste’s future can be one of hope, opportunity, and peace. ” "

"Apesar de frágil, Timor-Leste é uma jovem democracia em que acreditamos. É o país que escolhemos para viver e trabalhar. Desde dia 28 de Abril muito se tem dito sobre a situação em Timor-Leste. Boatos, rumores, alertas, declarações de países estrangeiros, inocentes ou não, têm servido para transmitir um clima de conflito e insegurança que não corresponde ao que vivemos. Vamos tentar transmitir o que se passa aqui. Não o que ouvimos dizer... "
