Interesting to note that Nemesio de Carvalho and Rui Lopes took very active part in the anti governmet demonstration. Rui Lopes came with his mob to Dili and I quickly recognised some of them as former militia members while serving with UNAMET. And the group of men holding guns in military camo, two of them I recognised and I can positively identify them as belonging to Halilintar militia (Maliana) group in 1999.

It is no wonder that some friends in Dili called me and warned me that many of the demonstrators had been former militia members in the past. Many of them did exactly the same thing they did in 1999.

Also interesting to see Leandro Isaac with a police issue steyr asault riffle. He looked like a rebel leader, almost like Taur Matan Ruak when he was in the jungles fighting the Indonesian while Isaac was a member of Indonesian government.

The documentary did not answer everything, but it does show that Alkatiri is not completely to blame for the crisis. I think it incriminates Leandro Isaacs and Reinaldo a fair bit and shows that the attack by Reinaldo on the troops at Fath ahi was a calculated attack in which there was some co-ordination between Isaacs and Reinaldo (and others). There was certainly some degree of co-ordination to bring down government. Its a coup, no doubt about it. Whether you support PD, PDS, FRETILIN, UDT or any other party, there are people out there who will use violence to achieve there aims (and Alkatiri is certainly not a violent person. He is certainly a tough politician, but not violent. In fact, the ex PM has not been charged at all and still has nothing to prove)

This is a new development that very interesting to observe.
I suspect someone is trying to hide or better saying protect someone who should be blame over the crisis.
The attitudes of the PR and his wife were terrific enough to destroy the country and now we look at this TV programme seem they are innocent.
I suggest our great friend John Martinkus (to once again) do another investigation on who controlled the PNTL during the demonstration on 28 April. Who ordered the PNTL commander to withdraw PNTL members? How the PNTL members with guns concentrated in Leandro’s house, some of them were in Balibar and came to attack the city.

Rai Los did mention he and his group have 33 guns (complete with serial number) which were given by former interior minister and only 12 that were handed over. I think PGR and the Aussie forces are not good in mathematics.

O Leandro?

"Rai Los did mention he and his group have 33 guns (complete with serial number) which were given by former interior minister and only 12 that were handed over."

This is absolutely incorrect. He had 30 odd MEMBERS in his group but not all were armed. The documents that he produced with the serial numbers of the weapons show a list of 15 HK33 machine guns. He handed in 11 guns at the liquisa hand over ceremony. The remaining 4 HK33 machineguns were captured by F-FDTL during the Tasitolu attack which some say prompted the army attack on police HQ because they were able to identify those 4 weapons as belonging to PNTL.

Get your facts right before you start going silly.

At height of militia activities in 99 the vast majority of Timorese including our elected president were enraged by the atrocious behaviors and killings carried out by the militias.

In 2006 our own elected president is using the same militias to carry out another campaign, the removal of a prime minister.

How can one comprehend that a very respectable and loved figure in East-Timor and around the world is capable in carrying out such campaign at cost of lives, countless of damages and disruption to lives that he dearly fought to protect.
Are we in self denial or are we lead to believe that the current events is for the best of Timor-Leste!

What is the explanation why Railos walked away with guns tucked in his pants at the handing over ceremony of the weapons to Xanana? This was reported by the Australian newspaper. The guns were pistols, not the heckler weapons mentioned in the ABC documentary.

Just curious.

Anónimo disse...

The same reason why Alfredo kept some pistols for his own protection.
With so many PNTL guns including a large number of illegal military guns in the hands of people who would be too willing to take a shot at them I don't blame them for trying to keep some means of personal protection. Although those pistols could not be a match for the machine guns that may turn against them.

No one has attempted to attack Reinado or Railos. Them keeping hand guns is simply inexecusable. What a joke of a response. No wonder Timor has so many problems.

Reinado is a liar (didn't hand weapons in) and is probably guilty of manslaughter (counted to seven and shot first as the dateline report shows). Now he is even a prison escapee.

He doesn't have faith in the justice system because he knows he is in trouble.
