MARK Aarons's extraordinary attack on my reporting from East Timor ("East Timor drama had no hidden agenda", 26/9) ignores the basic question of who started the violence in May that brought the current crisis to a head. Unlike Aarons, I'm a journalist and it is my job to report information I receive, even if it is unpalatable.
My job is not to be a cheerleader for a particular side. I have conducted thorough investigations in East Timor and have uncovered some uncomfortable facts. I know the UN investigation team is also privy to these facts and is arriving at the same conclusions I have reached.
If Aarons is so disturbed by my reports, then perhaps he should go to East Timor and do some reporting himself, rather than attacking journalists who've been there.

I was giggling when I read the article written by Mark Aarons.
Looks he was writing from Jupiter and it proves that he has little knowledge on the crises in Timor. I believe he is trying to move away substances of the crises by assaulting a CREDIBLE person like Martinkus. Many Timorese including Xanana know Martinkus quite well.
I would suggest Aarons to visit Dili and talk to various people here including the 2 bishops, they will explain how the crises commence and who put the fire first.
I and many other Timorese salute with the great jobs that Martinkus has contributed to reveal some facts that can not be revealed even by the Parliament.
PR has misused charisma and powers that he has to force some innocent people to launch a coup. Ask Paolo Martins (Chief of PNTL) and some people from Democratic Party.
In one of the declaration from Lucia Lobato (opposition members) that PR has promised to the opposition parties to wait until the budget and electoral laws approve then he will dissolve the NP. This is a serious declaration and I believe PR did promise it.
The place of Aarons’s article should be in the junk box.

It is of paramount importance that the diverging views and facts surrounding the current events in Timor Leste, however uncomfortable they may be, are reported. Good reporting does not answer, but raises fundamental questions; it is this that captivates the reader.
John Martinkus’s work has been captivating. He reports the rumours and uneasiness that are abound in Timor Leste and also offers documentary support and a clear insight as to why these rumours exist.
If Mark Aaron spent the same amount of time as John Martinkus has in Timor Leste then I am sure he would not be so unconstructive in his criticism.
mr Martinkus, stay away from my country and join your friends in Iraq, the ones who kidnnaped you and released you when they found out you were a friend of those terrorists

O extraordinário ataque de Mark Aarons à minha reportagem de Timor-Leste ("O drama de Timor-Leste não tinha agenda escondida ", 26/9) ignora a questão básica de quem começou a violência em Maio que trouxe a crise presente a um responsável. Ao contrário de Aarons, Eu sou um jornalista e faz parte do meu trabalho relatar a informação que recebo, mesmo se é desagradável.
O meu trabalho não é ser um promotor de um lado particular. Tenho conduzido investigações profundas em Timor-Leste e tenho posto a descoberto alguns factos desconfortáveis. Sei que a equipa de investigação da ONU já conhece alguns desses factos e está a chegar às mesmas conclusões a que cheguei.
Se Aarons está tão perturbado com as minhas reportagens, então talvez ele devesse ir a Timor-Leste e fazer algumas reportagens ele próprio, em vez de atacar jornalistas que estiveram lá.
