I follow though am not always able to read the contributions because they are in Portuguese. I must say I have been very impressed with the leadership shown by general Taur. The first time I saw a Timor leader on TV was in 1999 and it was Gen Taur greeting Gen Cosgrove and his interviews about falintil having to stay disciplined during their cantonement. I hope he runs for President. I always thought he should be the leader for East Timor.

At least he stands up to Howard and Downer, which is more than our opposition in Australia ever does. He would get my vote if I had one.

Brig Gen Ruak has had to deal with a great deal during his time as Commander of the F-Fdtl.

He understands more than anyone else about foreign direct interference in the F-FDTL. This interference which was always about undermining the relationship between the PNTL and F-FDTL (police and army) was ascertained as early as the Independendent Commission of Inquiry Report headed by the President of the Republic in August 2004 which cited in page 26: " F-FDTL members are disatisfied with the creation of the Special Police Unit which appeaqrs to remove from the F-FDTL its role. Some Australian instructors negatively influence some military personel in this regard".

I think an inquiry is more thyan warranted in the circumstances into the role of Australian advisors and their "divide and rule" tactics. This would not be the first time a nation has accused them of this: remember PNG in 2004 and recently in both Solomon Islands and Fiji too.

There is too much smoke to at least warrant a closer look to see if there is any actual fire.....and who the arsonists are hopefully.
